Karnischer Höhenweg

The final part of our summer holiday was a 6 day trek along the Austrian-Italian border called the Karnischer Höhenweg. The route follows the border starting in Osttirol from the town of Sillian. The border was a hard fought warzone in the First World War and the scars on the land still remain. Most of the trail uses roads and pathes used by both Austrian and Italian forces to supply troops. The path goes down and up vallies, across ridges and peaks, and through gorges and snow fields. Despite some crazy storms the first few days, the hike was completed successfully!

Already a small break on the first hill.

At the top looking back into Südtirol and the Dolomites.

Terrifying hole from the supply path from WWI.

Adding our name to the first peak.

The 100 year old border markers follow the entire route.

Made it to camp two right before the storm.

Halfway through the day from hell.

Starting the longest day - the Kronenweg - one step at a time.

300 meter drops on both sides.

403 is our number.

At the high point of the trek.

We are just visitors, this is a marmot's world.

Down in the valley in Italy.

Our three power Kärntner Oli, Alois and Chris.

Working hard to get back to Austria

Each day brought something unexpected. Day 5's suprise, cows in the mild of a spree path. No safe way around them. So Eva played cowgirl!

The final hut, the Wolayerseehütte, has a celebratory swim.

Ice water running through her veins.

Up our last hill and last ice field.

Salamanders on the path warming up.
